While
survey respondents liked the overall usability of a mobile device
and the convenience and portability of having their own computers
for clinical documentation/ accessing information, findings indicate
certain mobile form factors, features and attributes, mobile device
and system capabilities and issues with use of AHLTA (version 838
u21) on mobile devices prevent full adoption of mobile devices within
the MHS ambulatory care environment. Key mobile device acceptance
factors include offering multiple data input mechanisms to include
traditional keyboards, voice recognition and handwriting recognition
for the entry of patient data. Conversely, research found that the
Window XP Tablet OS 2005 edition handwriting recognition did not
fully support the provider’s documentation needs indicating
an improved version of the tool is required. Survey respondent’s
tolerance to the weight of a mobile device is in the range of 3.5
pounds or less. Workflow findings show differing mobile devices
needs for providers based on role, setting, and specialty; It is
evident that “one size does not fit all”.
